Logline: “Paulina Mercedes” is a story of George Lawrence, whose girlfriend Caroline is about to give birth to their new baby. Overwhelmed by the prospects of fatherhood, and doubting his ability to provide for his new family, George contemplates the unthinkable – abandoning his new family behind. With the help of a kind elderly woman, Paulina Mercedes, he will be taught that taking personal responsibility is the true path to happiness.
Plot Summary: GEORGE LAWRENCE is a young man who is just starting out in life. But, his carefree days are short lived when his girlfriend, CAROLINE, becomes pregnant. Now, nine months later, she is about to give birth to their new baby. Overwhelmed by self-doubt on his ability to provide for his new family, George feels trapped. He doesn’t know if he can deal with the awesome responsibility that awaits him. This responsibility becomes all too real for George, when Caroline goes into labor. On his way to the hospital, doubt creeps into George’s mind. He starts to contemplate the unthinkable – leaving his “new” family behind.
Enter PAULINA MERCEDES, and elderly woman, who runs into George at the hospital. Paulina is also in the hospital waiting for the birth of a relative. While waiting for their happy additions, George and Paulina Mercedes have a lively discussion of the virtues of parenthood and the happiness that children bring to one’s lives. Paulina recounts how her own father had abandoned her and her mother to fend for themselves. Paulina stresses to George about the virtues of being a good father and that his future “Daughter” will be happier in life if he was an active participant. Paralleling George’s own thoughts on leaving his new family, George finds a newfound strength on hearing Paulina’s story and her convictions.
He decides to stay and be the best father he can be.
In the hospital room with Caroline and the baby, George is happy that they are both doing well. He suggests that they should name their new daughter, Paulina Mercedes. Caroline is taken aback at the name, since it was the name of her great grandmother. Caroline tells George that Paulina’s father had left her and her mother to fend for themselves. George thinks back at the woman he has just met, and pauses and wonders – could she have been the same PERSON.
The question goes unanswered as George looks at his new daughter, and his future wife, and knows that he is happy.
